An adolescent boy usually notices a lot of physical changes in his puberty and growing facial hair is definitely one of the major visual changes. Although, facial hair starts to appear in puberty but not in a specific order.
In fact, all facial hairs don’t grow once at a time, rather they grow in different stages. So today, I’ve compiled the 5 stages of facial hair growth in puberty. Let’s jump in.
Stage 1: Hatching Fur (11 to 15 Years)
In puberty, between the ages of 10-11, facial hairs start to appear at the corners of the upper lips. In fact, these hairs aren’t yet considered mustaches or beards at this stage but normal facial furs.
Down the line, up to 15 years, facial hairs only grow on the upper lips and a few on the chin, in some cases, a few on the jaw-line. But still, they are thin and sparse.
Stage 2: Covering Up (16 to 17 Years)
At this stage, facial hair starts covering up the cheeks. It could be sometimes an awful teenage beard growth stage because teens usually deal with beard itch and other skin issues. The facial hairs fully develop on sideburns and neck area between 16-17 years of the teens.
But don’t get me wrong, it still depends on many other factors. Some men can’t even grow a fuller and thicker beard until their 30s.
So, if your male hormone levels are good enough and genetics are beard friendly then you can expect some sort of beard at this stage.
Stage 3: Patchy Facial Hairs (18 to 19 Years)
Welcome to the mature level, in this stage of puberty, you have comparatively more facial fairs than ever before.
But the issue is, your facial hairs aren’t that much attractive and shaped like other bearded hipsters. The reason is simple, you have patchy beards.
In puberty, teens often get overwhelmed to fix that patchiness. The truth is, you can’t improve it. It will even take the issue to the worst state.
So accept those patchy beards, it’s one of the teenage beard growth stages. With time, it will be fixed by itself.
Stage 4: Rapid Growth (20-23 Above)
In adolescence, 20-23 years is the ideal time for facial hair to grow up rapidly. Even if you may get bored sometimes, trim or shave off your facial hair more frequently.
At this beard development stage, it’s important to use some grooming products to keep your facial hair healthy. It’s important not to use any low-quality junk items. You always want to use the one crafted with 100% organic ingredients and no additives.
Stage 5: A Full Grown Beard (25 or Above)
Most men, usually get full-grown beards within 25 years of old, in some cases, 30 years of old. We can call it a full-grown beard stage.
But if you still have less beard or no beards on your cheeks, or maybe, you’re still struggling with patchy beards then these are the signs you can’t grow beards. You should consider visiting a skin specialist and looking for solutions.

Facial hair traps a lot of dirt, bacteria, and viruses on cheeks that are extremely harmful to beard health. Even it is believed, facial hairs could be as dirtier as poops, so you know how important daily care is. Check out my complete post on some weird beard facts.
You need to wash your beards daily with a good quality beard wash to keep them hygienic and healthy.
2. Remove Dead Skin Cells
It’s important to focus on dead skin cell removal as they could block new hair growth and may even damage hair follicles. So consider exfoliating your face with good quality and 100% organic scrub.
Since facial hairs get foundations in puberty, it’s even more important in this stage.
3. Maintain Healthy Living
In puberty, a healthy lifestyle matters a lot to developing healthy facial hair. What you eat, how much you sleep, and when you get up in the morning hugely impact your facial hair.
Adolescent boys typically live less disciplinary life but that’s not good for facial hair’s health. The 3 DONTs for teenage beard growth.
- Don’t go to sleep late at night.
- Don’t get up late in the morning.
- Don’t eat junk or street foods.
4. Plan on Healthy Diet
Adolescent boys should consume foods that are rich in nutritional value like- meat, fish, milk, eggs, and green vegetables. In puberty, facial hair growth could be demotivated if there are nutritional deficiencies in the body.
At least, some major vitamins like- B1, B6, and B12 must be included in the diet plan.
5. Exercise
You should include regular exercise in your daily TO-DO list. It increases blood circulation and keeps your body active.
Thus, exercise increases the chance of facial hair growth. Physical exercise early in the morning helps more.
